The Tennessee Museum of Aviation

Another must-see museum on our list is the Tennessee Museum of Aviation. This community treasure has been around since 1984 and ranks as the second largest Air Force museum in the United States. Located at the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport in Sevierville, it displays a variety of aircraft, including trainers, fighters, helicopters, jets, and amphibious vehicles.

When you visit, you may be in for an unexpected treat, as they often host unscheduled flight demonstrations. If you’re eager to catch one, feel free to call the museum to inquire about the timing of their next demo. While many of these events are spontaneous, the museum staff usually have a good idea of when they will take place, so don’t hesitate to reach out.

The Appalachian

Offering a modern take on Appalachian cuisine, The Appalachian provides an upscale dining experience in Sevierville’s historic downtown. The Roaming Gnome Pub & Eatery

Often referred to as “The Gnome,” The Roaming Gnome Pub & Eatery is a lively and budget-friendly eatery in Sevierville. With an extensive selection of over 70 beers, a variety of cocktails, and non-alcoholic choices, it’s definitely worth a stop.

The food is fantastic, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable—don’t forget to order the cheeseburger. The kitchen remains open until 2 am, making it ideal for late-night snacking.

Be Bear Ready: Awareness & Etiquette

Sevier County, thanks to its proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is home to a healthy population of black bears. Estimates suggest there are around 1,500 to 2,000 black bears in the entire park —  with roughly two per square mile. While black bears are generally shy and prefer to steer clear of humans, they are still powerful wild animals. Stay alert and show them the respect they deserve!

It’s also very important to remember not to feed the bears. This behavior teaches them to seek out humans for more food. And as you might expect, bears and humans don’t always mix well.

Most of the activities and attractions in Sevier County involve nature exploration, and when doing so, it’s important to be mindful of the natural surroundings and how we can enjoy them in a respectful way. Here are some things to have in mind:

• Stick to marked paths to prevent damage to native plants and wildlife habitats.

• Be respectful of wildlife when taking photos and avoid disturbing their habitats for the perfect shot.

• Clean up after yourself by packing out all trash, including food scraps and litter.

• Observe animals from a distance. Do not feed or approach them, as this can alter their natural behaviors.
  
• Refrain from picking flowers, plants, or disturbing natural features to preserve the ecosystem.
  
• Choose biodegradable soap and personal care products, and avoid single-use plastics to reduce your environmental impact.
  
• Whenever possible, walk, bike, or use public transportation to reduce your carbon footprint while enjoying nature.
  

Tennessee: The Home of Pancakes

Did you know that Sevier County, particularly Pigeon Forge, is home to one of the highest concentrations of pancake houses in America? While the reason for this abundance isn’t entirely clear, some suggest it began with loggers needing a hearty breakfast to fuel their long days.

Others claim it’s due to pancakes being the quintessential “breakfast of the South,” making any morning meal incomplete without a stack. Since the region has some of the best pancake houses, we can’t help but share our favorite spots to indulge in this fluffy delicacy. They are Pancake Pantry in Gatlinburg, and Sawyer’s Farmhouse Restaurant and Reagan’s House of Pancakes, both in Pigeon Forge.
